IOU-coupons, these little bits of paper are genius! Let me explain what I mean and I think you will agree.
Knitting gifts for your friends and family is fun and all the love you knit into the items makes you all warm and fuzzy inside. That’s wonderful!
But sometimes things go wrong… A handmade gift gets super-stressful! It doesn’t matter for which occasion you’re making a gift, sometimes you will run out of time, energy or yarn. It happens to all of us.
Now you feel awful about that gift. In the best-case scenario, you have a plan B. Like time and money to get out to buy a gift instead. Or, the possibility to stay up on Christmas eve to finish the project at supernatural speed…
The IOU-coupon is your get-out-of-jail-card
Now is the time to use your get-out-of-jail-card aka your IOU-coupon.
The receiver of the gift/ IOU-coupon will feel all the love and care you have put into this project, even thou it’s not finished yet. And then later when you have finished the gift they will feel it all over again! That’s twice the amount of joy!
And you, have just bought yourself some stress-free knitting time to finish the item in peace. See what I mean? This is nothing but genius…
Make the IOU-coupon a fun gift!
You could absolutely make something extra and turn this miscue to your advantage. Here are some ideas!
- Add a coupon to a candy bar. Everyone loves chocolate, right?
- Place the knitting with the IOU-coupon on top in a pretty gift box. I bet you can get some giggles with this one!
- Add an IOU-coupon to a flee-market garment of the same kind that you are working on and make a cute gift wrapping. You could add these cute coloring gift tags to the wrapping!
I made you some IOU-coupons…
Of course, I couldn’t make all this fuzz about IOU-coupons without providing you with some.
I created these to go with every season. There is one for Christmas, one for Birthdays and two that’s just cute!
So, please go ahead and grab those IOU-coupons. You know you will need them at some point…!
Print these on your home printer. You could use regular printing paper and glue them on a card or a piece of cardstock. Or if your printer can manage it print directly on the cardstock.
You could use a scissor to cut these. Or, if you prefer, a paper cutter like this one. It’s faster and makes straight and clean cuts!

And a little bonus…
It had so much fun creating these so I made some matching gift tags to go with them too!
Print and cut them like the coupons and add them to your gift!
- Punch a hole and use a string to attach the tag to your gift. I love the look of bakers twine, and it comes in a lot of pretty colors. This gold and white one is perfect for the Holidays!
- You could also use these more like labels and glue them on or use some pretty washi-tape to add them to your wrapping. Or print them on label sheets!
